Hazardous Waste Characterization
The most simple definition of hazardous waste comes from the EPA. It says "hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment."
It begins to get complicated pretty quickly and can be quite confusing. There are four lists containing items defined as hazardous waste: List F, List K, List P and List U from 40 CFR section 261.31-33. Just mentioning the letters CFR can make anyone cringe.
The important thing to know is that if you incorrectly define a hazardous waste, it can cause regulatory problems and long-term liability.
